“Trios never work” “Always a duo in a trio” But at night, i lie awake, speaking softly with the moon and counting stars until their light begins to fade into the morning sun. And I sit quietly in the nature around me, the sky unfolding above me, the pond resting at my feet, somehow i find a feeling too vast for language. Tracing the branches and roots of a tree that has known my name, i wonder where my two favorite people are as i imagine the roots remember us. Snows falls gently at my side until late spring breathes its warmth into the earth and hail softens into rain and the rain falls, inviting me to dance beneath it. And when i finally walk home, my family is waiting for me. Before the evening carries them away, i hold my sister’s baby and my grandma. My arms hold them tight as though love were something that could be gathered though birth, life, and death and kept. Because life comes in threes as often as it comes in twos, three stars, roots, and hearts making something none could make alone.
