Tokyo Sakura Jinguu - Blue Goshuin On May 15, Meiji 15, Masamochi Yoshimura—a 65th-generation descendant of the Ōnakatomi clan and the chief priest of Ise Grand Shrine—felt a sense of crisis over the government’s policy shift, which stipulated that “shrine priests must not teach or guide the people.” In order to revive the ancient Shinto traditions that had been passed down continuously since the age of the gods, and to ensure that the shrine would not merely conduct festivals but would also be able to perform sacred rites while firmly engaging in the propagation of the faith to the people, he obtained imperial permission from Emperor Meiji and established one of the thirteen sects of Shinto. The name chosen was “The Teaching of Divine Learning,” which he had received through an oracle from Princess Yamatohime during his time as chief priest at Ise Grand Shrine. Since then, the shrine has been cherished as the Shrine of Ōkami, which carries on the tradition of ancient Shinto, and as the head temple of this teaching. The main hall was first built in Kanda, Tokyo City, in Meiji 16. In the late Meiji period, large numbers of people made pilgrimages here, drawn by the deity’s reputation for “healing illnesses” and “preventing fires.” Furthermore, through introductions by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, many foreigners visited the shrine to participate in rituals such as the Fire-Quelling Ceremony (fire-walking) and the Hot Spring Ritual (bathing in hot water). In Taisho 8, following an oracle instructing, “Move immediately to the west,” the shrine was relocated to its current location in Setagaya. While the Kanto Earthquake caused extensive damage in the Kanda area, this relocation allowed the shrine to escape the disaster. Furthermore, the shrine also survived World War II unscathed and is revered for its power to “ward off disasters.” Learn more about this shrine: https://www.sakura.jingu.net/ Song: Clair de Lune Artist: Claude Debussy #tokyo #東京 #御朱印 #神社 #桜
