I think what I took from it is that Cathy believed that evil was all that existed, and it could excuse the evil things that she did. I don’t necessarily think that she was evil but I think she did bad things thinking that she was evil. The fact that it broke her heart so much to see how disappointed her son was in her really sold it to me that she wasn’t as bad as she thought she was. It feels like a core theme here is that the evil you choose to do is you yourself and there is no greater power here controlling it.

Throughout the entire show, I stood by her side because how could she be subjected to the exploitation of every single man in it? She voiced her concerns repeatedly, yet no one paid attention. It wasn’t until she witnessed the innocence in her own son that she lost hope and ultimately ended her life.

she didn’t have a choice then, and every time she hurt someone or tried to leave was when that person forced her to do something she didn’t want, ring a bell?? I don’t consider her pure evil, her father was an abusive piece of trash, her mother did nothing to defend her, she was most likely gr**med by her teacher (mind u she was a minor), she had to sell her body to survive, the only really bad thing she did, i think, was killing the madame, the world is not black and white people

My take on her is that she had severe trauma and ptsd and probably some other problems to lol! And because of that rage and fear she ran and hurt people her whole life until she broke down! She was controlled by every one she had met her entire life and wanted to be free and decide for herself! All she wanted was control! She was narcissistic psycho too ofc lol

I love the changes they made to her character. Especially since Steinbeck wrote a LOT in his journal that Kathy was based on his ex wife who had the audacity to leave him during this time.

I think things whould have been different if her story would have been set in our century where women have more rights . Because she felt like she had no choices to have money , she could either be a good wife (but stop being free) or become a pimp and be free . She chosed to hurt other and being selfish ,to be free but a the end se regretted because she felt unloved . That doesn’t excuse what she did but i feel if she had more rights and choices she would have not been this messed up
