This but slacktivism is also real problem ppl should look into. I think “performative activism” should only be referred specifically for those that only talk about causes online but irl actions and beliefs do not line up with it, which can tie into slacktivism and obvious clout chasing. Performative activism is definitely still an issue to talk about but the problem is people are using that term in the wrong context and for the wrong people that it just demotivates others to advocate and protest

Fantastic animation & While I do agree wholeheartedly with the point you’re making, that’s not really what people mean when they talk abt performative activism, it’s a lot more not practicing what you preach or people saying one thing while doing/believing another. Like the most common thing I see is folks going around saying “protect the dolls” & proclaim themselves to be allies, but when they have a chance to actually stand up for a trans person (trans men & nonbinary people especially) they bend over backwards to not do so, or completely flip and join in on the harassment.

my thing with is it when people repost those fake cryptic messages that spell out DO NOT STOP TALKING ABOUT THE FILES rather than.. actually talking about whats in them, because that doesnt actually spread anything about the files

Thank you for this. Even if activism was “performative,” the word is still being spread and the issue is gaining awareness, so why does it matter? Nobody is gaining anything out of spreading the word for real-world issues. It’s just a way to silence those speaking up.

i have to disagree. there are definitely people who have something to gain from said performance if they are in the right circles. the problem with the performance isnt that "we're both fighting for the same issue". its that those people dont fight at all, they just want to seem like they do when in reality they wont lift a finger to actually help those in need

True, especially since a good chunk of those doing "performative activism" are minors who can't do much to support the cause. Sure there are better ways to spread awareness and to educate yourself but discouraging it all together is worse.

I dont rlly think its about it being performative anymore its about the people treating it as a trend. Many of these same people often just abt it once and call it day without bringing awareness of whats really happening.

Unfortunately I agree with certain parts and disagree with some. I have seen abusers and manipulators performing activism as if they care for a certain group of people, and then go on to cause harm to that same group, whether if it was intentional or not. I do believe that we shouldn’t throw around the word “performative activism” everywhere, but some people clearly cherry pick activism to make themselves look like good people.
