｡꩜˚⋆ izzy ⋆˚꩜｡ :

In the uk we call them 'ladybirds' because the name dates back to the middle ages when farmers prayed to the Virgin Mary (our lady) to save their crops from pests, when these red-and-black beetles arrived and ate the destructive aphids farmers viewed them as a gift from mary and called them "Our Lady's bird". In historical English "bird" was often used to describe any small, flying creature, which eventually was shortened to "ladybird."
