@mosheh: Flydubai hero captain Smit Machchhar offered his first detailed account Saturday of how the cockpit attack began, saying his copilot asked to pray before striking him repeatedly from behind with an axe. The Indian pilot revealed the new details during a phone call with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, a day after speaking with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Machchhar said he faced forward out of respect for what he thought was his copilot praying behind him. Four or five minutes later, he felt repeated blows to the back of his head. UAE prosecutors say the attacker used a crash ax, emergency equipment commonly kept in cockpits. The copilot, identified as Omani national Hamam al-Hammami, was previously barred from flying at Oman Air after working as a pilot for over several years due to Islamic extremism concerns. He left that airline in 2025 and got a job with FlyDubai this year. Barely able to see, Machchhar said he felt the aircraft plunge. Al-Hammami thwarted his first attempt to open the cockpit door and blocked crew outside from entering with an access code. Hearing screams, Machchhar summoned “one last fight,” reached the internal handle and opened it with a quick twist. Israeli passengers who were hearing the altercation had gathered outside. With the door open, they rushed in, subdued the attacker and stabilized the flight. Two additional off-duty pilots traveling in the cabin then helped land the plane in Saudi Arabia. Their presence proved crucial. Gulf airlines increasingly have been flying extra pilots in cabins to manage for Iran war-related disruptions, re-routes, delays and schedule changes.
