Feeling tired after meals? Stubborn belly fat that won't budge? Energy crashing every afternoon? There's a good chance your body is becoming insulin resistant. And here's the frustrating part - your blood sugar can come back completely "normal" on a standard test. That doesn't mean your metabolism is fine. Because long before glucose ever rises, insulin rises first. That's the number you actually need to know. There's a simple way to estimate this. It's called HOMA-IR (Homeostatic Model Assessment of Insulin Resistance) and most doctors never test it. You calculate it using two numbers from a standard blood test: → Fasting glucose → Fasting insulin Multiply them together, then divide by 22.5. That's your HOMA-IR score. Here's why it matters: → Below 1 - you're nicely insulin sensitive → Between 1 and 2 - you're drifting towards mild insulin resistance → Above 2 - you're into full insulin resistance → Above 2.5 to 3 - this is a significant issue So you can have "normal" blood sugar on paper, but a high HOMA-IR score. That means your body is pumping out more and more insulin just to keep glucose looking fine. That's the early stage of metabolic dysfunction. Left unchecked, it drives fat storage, energy crashes, inflammation, and eventually chronic disease. But here's the part that matters most. Catch it at this stage, and it's highly reversible. Your body isn't broken. Your cells have simply stopped responding properly to the signal. Restore that sensitivity, and everything downstream starts to improve, naturally, in most cases.
