Shaula’s death in Re:Zero is heartbreaking because of just how long she waited for Subaru. She spent 400 years waiting for the person she had been told to protect, only to finally meet him and have just two days with him. After waiting for centuries, she finally got the chance to see him, talk to him, and be around the person she had been waiting for—but that happiness was taken away almost immediately. What makes it even more painful is what happens to her afterward. Shaula, who had always been human-like and full of personality, ends up transforming into a scorpion, losing the form that made her feel like herself. Yet even after everything changed, her first instinct was still to protect Subaru and the others. She had spent centuries waiting for her purpose to finally be fulfilled, only for it to end almost as soon as it began. And that's what makes Shaula's story so devastating. She waited 400 years for someone, only to have 2 days with him. Four centuries of loneliness, patience, and hope were rewarded with such a painfully short moment of happiness. She didn't get the chance to spend years with Subaru, to see where his journey would lead, or to simply live alongside the person she had waited so long to meet. Shaula waited 400 years for Subaru, but Subaru only got 2 days with Shaula. And maybe that's the cruelest part of all—not that she waited so long, but that when the person she had been waiting for finally arrived, she barely had any time to enjoy it. After 400 years of waiting, she deserved more than two days. She deserved a future with the person she had protected for centuries. Instead, her long-awaited reunion became a brief moment in time, leaving behind the painful feeling that 400 years of waiting ended far too soon. She will live on in our hearts.
