Last time, we discussed how a single pair can produce almost the entire color spectrum of the breed. Today, let’s look at the flip side: If both parents are the exact same color, does it guarantee puppies of that same color? Short answer: It depends entirely on whether the coat color is dominant or recessive! Here is the genetics breakdown for every "Same × Same" color pairing: 🖤 1. Black × Black Possible puppy colors: ALL 5 standard colors (Black, Red, Cream, Blue, Cinnamon). Why: Black is dominant. It can secretly mask hidden recessive genes (e and d). If both black parents are hidden carriers, you can get the entire palette in one litter! 🦊 2. Red × Red Possible puppy colors: Red, Cream, and CINNAMON (if both parents carry the hidden blue dilution gene d). Impossible: You will NEVER get black or blue puppies from two red parents. Why: Red Chows carry the ee combination, meaning they lack the dominant black gene (E). They cannot produce black pigment on the coat. However, if both red parents carry the dilution gene (d), their diluted red offspring (ee dd) will be Cinnamon! 🍦 3. Cream × Cream Possible puppy colors: 100% CREAM puppies ONLY! Impossible: No black, blue, red, or rich cinnamon puppies can come from two cream parents. Why: Cream is an extremely diluted red coat (ee + intensity modifiers). The parents simply lack the genes to pass on rich color intensity. If both cream parents carry the d gene, 25% of the litter will be "dilute creams" (featuring a slate/blue nose leather instead of black), but their coat will remain cream. 🐺 4. Blue × Blue Possible puppy colors: Blue and Cinnamon. Impossible: No black or rich red puppies. Why: Both parents pass the dilution gene (dd) to 100% of their puppies. If both blue parents carry the hidden red gene (e), they can produce both blue and cinnamon offspring. 🌾 5. Cinnamon × Cinnamon (Fawn) Possible puppy colors: 100% Cinnamon ONLY! Why: Cinnamon is a double recessive coat color (ee + dd). Parents have no other genes to give. 100% of the puppies will be cinnamon (though shades can range from rich cinnamon to silver-fawn). 💡 Golden Rule of Genetics: The more recessive genes a coat color has, the more predictable the outcome. Both "Cream × Cream" and "Cinnamon × Cinnamon" pairings guarantee 100% same-color puppies! But sometimes there are surprises 😉🤔 #chowchow #ChowChowPuppy #chowtrimedvedya #chowchowlovers #geneticdogs
