Doesn’t the gulfstream going up past NY and Mass? If so, why aren’t they warm?

They may be at the same latitude, but there are different longitudes. And the tilt of the planet is different.

The earth is not a perfect round shape, it’s more of a pear 🍐 so just because the lines line up there are other aspects to consider

Weird you say that about Madrid. I arrived in December in a snow storm and it was cold for a couple of months. We definitely didn’t sit outside. This was in the 1980s so probably the climate has changed since then!

Wouldnt the warm water have the same effect on both places.

Or the jet stream brings wind and heat from different directions much like ocean current flowing north to south on one side of a continent and south to north on the other. It is more complex than just one variable but not that hard to conceptualize. These are so weird.

the Mediterranean Sea keeps the heat longer to the inland and in the states the cold winds from Canadian Rocky’s blows west to east. So of course the weather is completely different

this is why the pilgrims suffered a lot when they first came to america. they settled down in the north east bc they assumed the same latitude would mean the same winter conditions. they were wrong, the winters ended up being harsher than they anticipated.

This always tripped my mind tbh. Psychologically, Rome Italy to me is way down south, but no 😐

so ocean currents are unpredictable over geologic timescales, got it

The level of salinity has everything to do with it, higher levels faster currents, lower levels slower currents. As a result, we will have earthquakes, stationary climate conditions, hotter summers and colder winters.
