@the__quiet__reset_: Have you ever confronted someone about something they did, only to somehow find yourself defending your own character instead? You raise an issue. They deny it happened. Then they attack you for bringing it up. And suddenly, somehow, they are the victim and you're the problem. This pattern has a name: DARVO D — DENY They deny the behaviour, the event or their responsibility. A — ATTACK Instead of addressing what happened, they attack your character, motives or credibility. RVO — REVERSE VICTIM AND OFFENDER The person who was confronted positions themselves as the victim, while portraying the person who raised the concern as the offender. And this can be incredibly disorientating. You can walk into a conversation knowing exactly why you're upset... …and walk away questioning yourself. "Maybe I overreacted." "Maybe I was the problem." "Why am I apologising?" "How did this become about me?" DARVO can be particularly damaging because it can shift the focus away from accountability. Instead of: “Let's talk about what happened.” It becomes: “Look what you've made me do.” Instead of: “I understand why you're hurt.” It becomes: “You're attacking me.” Instead of accountability: deflection. Instead of resolution: confusion. But it's important to remember: Not every disagreement is DARVO. Someone disagreeing with you, defending themselves, or having a different recollection of an event doesn't automatically mean they're manipulating you. DARVO refers to a recognisable pattern of denial, attack and reversal of victim and offender, particularly when it is used to avoid accountability. You don't have to become aggressive to defend yourself. You don't have to prove your reality to everyone. And you don't have to accept blame simply because someone has become louder, more emotional or more convincing. Accountability sounds very different from DARVO. Accountability says: "I did this. I understand the impact. I'm sorry. What can I do differently?" DARVO says: "I didn't do it. You're the problem. Look what you've done to me." Learn the difference. Because sometimes the moment you stop defending yourself against the reversal is the moment you finally see what is happening. You are allowed to recognise the pattern without becoming part of it. 🖤 #EndTheCycle #EmotionalWellbeing #selfawareness #selfworth #HealingJourney
