@carthatcar: When the Chevrolet Vega arrived for the 1971 model year, General Motors had enormous expectations. This was supposed to be Chevrolet’s sophisticated new small car—a stylish American answer to the increasingly popular imports coming from Volkswagen, Toyota and Datsun. And there was plenty to like. The Vega was attractive, relatively lightweight and available as a two-door sedan, hatchback, wagon and Panel Express. Its 2.3-liter four-cylinder also featured an aluminum engine block without conventional iron cylinder liners, an ambitious piece of engineering for an inexpensive American compact. Unfortunately, ambition didn’t always translate into durability. Early Vegas became notorious for problems involving overheating, oil consumption, engine durability and severe body rust. Chevrolet made numerous improvements during the production run, but the reputation was difficult to overcome. Yet the Vega story isn’t simply about failure. The styling was excellent, millions were sold, and enthusiasts quickly discovered the lightweight rear-wheel-drive platform was perfect for something Chevrolet never intended: V8 swaps. Hot rodders transformed Vegas into seriously fast street and drag cars. Then there was the Cosworth Vega, featuring a sophisticated twin-cam, sixteen-valve engine developed with Cosworth. It showed just how interesting the basic Vega concept could become. Today, surviving Vegas are surprisingly uncommon, and the cars have become fascinating reminders of an ambitious moment in GM history. Was the Chevy Vega truly a bad car—or a good idea that reached production before GM had completely figured it out?
