@surname.guessr: Malawi has around 21 million people and a surname list that leans on a remarkably short set of names: Banda, Phiri, Mwale, Nkhoma, Chirwa, Gondwe, Mhango, Tembo, Kachale, Ngwira. Many of these aren't family names in the European sense — they're clan names, markers of a descent group rather than a household, so huge numbers of unrelated people carry the same one. Malawi is a long thin country wrapped around a lake that holds more fish species than any other lake on Earth, most found nowhere else. Phiri means hill. Banda runs across the borders into Zambia and Mozambique, because the clan is older than the border. Hastings Banda led the country for three decades; Joyce Banda led it later — and they weren't related at all. 🇲🇼 #SurnameGuessr #Surnames #Malawi #Africa #Etymology
