it is correct, the rad alt is used below 500 as above that it uses another system using air pressure as it doesn't have to be so accurate. the rad alt is placed at the rear of the aircraft, so when its landing it is in a nose up attitude. the rear of the plane is closest to the ground. if it was placed at the front, the rear of the aircraft would be lower than the nose, so the nose might be 20ft of the ground but the tail would only be 10ft above the ground, so would contact the ground as the nose would still indicate 10ft above the ground.
