@ksgarner: After posting a wedding dress I made a couple days ago, I’ve been thinking a lot… Dressmaking and sewing is skilled labor. This is my opinion. I would love to know your thoughts in the comments.
You are 100% correct. If it was a man who sewed that wedding dress, by default many people would see it as valuable (e.g. creation of a fashion designer, inherently worth major $$, respect and revere their artistry). Instead your work is dismissed and devalued right off the bat.

I couldn’t agree with you more. I’m a 62 yr old woman. Never sewn anything in my entire life besides a wrap around skirt in high school. Just got my very first sewing machine. Brother strong & tough st150hdhd. Just learned how to fill a bobbin and thread the machine. Practiced straight lines and so far I’ve only made dog bandanas, scrunchies and the last project was this dog collar. I want to be good at sewing so bad but o have so much practice to do AND SO SO MUCH TO LEARN. I’m really amazed at what goes into sewing and all the different techniques, and just the amount of knowledge it takes to feel comfortable around a sewing machine… It’s more than a skill it’s a learned CRAFT!

The fashion industry, like many industries, has been dominated by men. A woman sews a dress? Normal. A man sews one? Haute couture. It makes me think of the origin of Fine Art vs. Craft. Womens' work was craft. Only men made "fine art". Stupid sexist nonsense.
