More than 2 million bullets were made before Israel existed. They came from a secret factory beneath a laundry. From 1945 the Haganah, the Zionist movement's underground army, ran the Ayalon Institute under a hill outside Rehovot. A bread oven stood over one hidden opening, a washing machine over the other. Below, 45 young men and women made bullets for the Sten submachine gun, for a war that had not yet begun. Some of the machines had been bought in 1938. It was one of the Haganah's secret weapons plants. In New York in 1945, David Ben-Gurion asked wealthy men for millions, in secret. Haganah agents in America bought war-surplus machines that make weapons and smuggled them into Palestine. By late 1947 the plants were making mortars, submachine guns, grenades and bullets in large numbers. All of it was running before there was a state. Near Rehovot was Zarnuqa, a Palestinian village of orange groves. In December 1947 it asked Rehovot for a pact not to fight. No pact was made. In April 1948 armed irregulars moved in. On 27 May Israeli forces attacked. A letter to an Israeli newspaper passed on a soldier's account: one of the soldiers opened a door and fired a Sten at an old man, an old woman and a child in one burst. Six villagers were killed and 22 taken prisoner. The rest were driven out, twice. In June their houses were torn down. Zarnuqa asked for peace. The army that came for it had been built for years. Sources on the cards: Haganah Heritage Organisation; Benny Morris, The Birth of the Palestinian Refugee Problem Revisited (2004) and Righteous Victims (2001); Tom Segev, A State at Any Cost (2019); Haim Bresheeth-Zabner, An Army Like No Other (2020); Adam Raz, Loot (2024).
