The cockade fan looks like the love child of the Japanese folding fan and the Chinese round fan. But its family tree is much messier than that. Folding fans developed in Japan and reached China through Goryeo (Korea) around the 10-11th century. Full-circle folding flabella existed in medieval Europe, while Canton workshops were producing elaborate cockade fans for European buyers by the late 18th century. Whatever the precise relationship between these forms, there is no evidence taking this folding mechanism back to the Han dynasty (2000 years ago). Yet an officially recognised Chinese heritage craftsman presents a fan with this much later mechanism as the restoration of a 2,000 yr old Han object. This points to a broader tendency in heritage-making: an ancient lineage can create legitimacy, prestige and commercial value, so uncertainty becomes inconvenient. My problem is when the pedigree is decided first and history is made to fit it. Claims of origin and uninterrupted lineage have become important to the project of building cultural confidence. But is it really confidence if it depends on being the first, the oldest and untouched by outside influence? Personally I find genuine cultural confidence means being secure enough to acknowledge gaps, borrowings, reinventions and exchange.
