Panic Room (2002) follows recently divorced Meg Altman and her diabetic daughter Sarah, who move into a Manhattan brownstone and, on their first night, are targeted by three burglars: Junior, the former owner’s grandson; Burnham, a security expert who helped design the house’s panic room; and the violent Raoul. The men are after millions in bearer bonds hidden in a safe inside the panic room, but Meg and Sarah lock themselves inside it when they discover the break-in. The burglars try various ways to force them out, including pumping propane into the room, which Meg ignites, causing an explosion. Sarah’s diabetes then becomes critical because her medication is outside, forcing Meg to risk leaving the room to retrieve it. Junior eventually wants to abandon the robbery, but Raoul kills him and becomes increasingly violent, while Burnham grows disturbed by what is happening and ultimately gives Sarah the injection she desperately needs. Meg’s ex-husband Stephen arrives but is brutally attacked, and although police also come, Meg initially sends them away because Sarah is being held hostage. Burnham and Raoul eventually open the safe and obtain the bonds, but as they try to escape, Raoul attempts to murder Meg with a sledgehammer; Burnham turns back and shoots Raoul dead rather than allow Meg and Sarah to be killed. Burnham flees with the money but is arrested outside while much of it scatters in the wind, and Meg, Sarah and Stephen survive. The film ends with Meg and Sarah searching for another home, finally putting their terrifying night behind them.
