Once Mendeley is connected to Word, inserting citations is faster than typing them manually will ever be. Here is the full process. Before you start: Make sure Mendeley Desktop is open and running in the background. The Word plugin communicates with the desktop application in real time. Installing the Word plugin (if you have not done this yet): 1. Open Mendeley Desktop. 2. Go to Tools, then Install MS Word Plugin. 3. Restart Word. 4. The Mendeley Cite button will now appear in your References tab in the Word ribbon. Inserting a citation: 1. Place your cursor in your document where you want the citation — typically at the end of a sentence before the full stop. 2. Click the Mendeley Cite button in the References tab. 3. The Mendeley Cite panel opens on the right side of the screen. 4. Type the author surname or a keyword from the title in the search bar. 5. The paper appears in the results. 6. Click the paper to select it. A tick appears next to it. 7. Click Insert Citation at the bottom of the panel. 8. The citation appears in your document in the correct format. Inserting multiple citations at the same point: 1. After selecting the first paper in the panel, search for and select the second paper. Both will have ticks next to them. 2. Click Insert Citation. Both citations appear together in the correct format. Generating your bibliography: 1. Place your cursor at the end of your document. 2. In the Mendeley Cite panel, click the three-line settings icon. 3. Select Insert Bibliography. 4. Your complete reference list generates in your chosen citation style. Updating your bibliography after adding new citations: Mendeley updates your bibliography automatically as you add citations throughout the document. If it does not update immediately, click the refresh icon in the Mendeley Cite panel. Save this and insert your next citation the right way. 📚👇🏾 #LearnWithDrYemi #Mendeley #ReferenceManager #MicrosoftWord #academicwriting
