Interviewer: Welcome back! Today, we’re speaking with Frank Canova, the inventor of something most of us have used—but probably never thought much about: the smartphone! Interviewer: So, Frank, let’s start with the basics. When did you first come up with the idea of a smartphone? Frank Canova: I came up with the idea in the early 1990s while working at IBM. I imagined a device that could combine a mobile phone with other useful computer functions. Interviewer: And that idea eventually became the IBM Simon, right? Frank Canova: Exactly. The IBM Simon was introduced in 1994. It had a touchscreen and could do much more than simply make phone calls. Tech Expert: It was really an important step in the development of smartphones because it combined communication and computer functions in one device. Interviewer: That sounds pretty advanced for the 1990s! What could it actually do? Frank Canova: It could make calls, send faxes and emails, and had features such as a calendar, address book, and notes. Interviewer: What happened after the IBM Simon? John Sculley: During the 1990s, companies continued developing mobile devices with more computer-like features. Apple also worked on devices such as the Newton MessagePad. Tech Expert: Yes, and smartphones continued becoming smaller, faster, and more powerful over the years. Interviewer: And then came the iPhone, right? John Sculley: Apple introduced the first iPhone in 2007, which helped popularize the modern smartphone. Interviewer: And now, smartphones are everywhere. We use them to communicate, study, take photos, watch videos, and access the Internet. Tech Expert: Exactly. Smartphones have become an important part of everyday life. Frank Canova: It’s amazing to see how much smartphones have changed since the 1990s. Interviewer: From a simple idea to a powerful device that fits in our pockets—that’s quite a story! Interviewer: Thank you all for joining us today! Frank Canova: My pleasure! John Sculley: Thank you! Tech Expert: Glad to be here! Interviewer: And that’s the story behind th
