Christopher Columbus (1451–1506) was an Italian navigator and explorer whose voyages across the Atlantic Ocean connected Europe with the Americas in a lasting way. He was born in Genoa, Italy, and became an experienced sailor who spent many years studying navigation, geography, maps, and maritime travel. In 1492, Columbus sailed west across the Atlantic under the sponsorship of King Ferdinand II and Queen Isabella I of Spain. His goal was to find a western sea route to Asia. On October 12, 1492, his expedition reached islands in the Caribbean, beginning a series of voyages that greatly changed European knowledge of the Atlantic world. Columbus made four voyages across the Atlantic between 1492 and 1504. He explored parts of the Caribbean and the coasts of Central and South America. He believed for much of his life that he had reached areas of Asia, rather than a previously unknown continent to Europeans. His voyages had enormous historical consequences. They helped establish lasting connections between Europe and the Americas and were followed by further European exploration, colonization, trade, and the movement of people, plants, animals, and diseases across the Atlantic. Columbus remains a controversial historical figure. His expeditions contributed to European colonization and caused devastating consequences for many Indigenous peoples, including violence, exploitation, forced labor, and the spread of diseases. For this reason, his legacy is viewed very differently by different societies and historians. Christopher Columbus died in Valladolid, Spain, in 1506.
