People who think $500,000/year family income is “upper class” have no idea how much money is in major US cities. Look at real estate prices: how much are people making who are buying homes in major cities? $500K is two not-very successful doctors or lawyers each earning $250K. These people are *not* rich. They have zero freedom on their own schedules, they have bosses, they don’t fly business class, and they’re slaves to a gigantic mortgage on a house that’s close to where they can actually earn that money (major urban centers). Colleges see them as losers because they aren’t rich enough to donate a library and aren’t poor enough to make the college look good by helping them out. They pay the most taxes because they’re workers not owners, and then the colleges crush them with full-boat tuition because they make too much. Colleges want exactly two types: Asset owners with $100M+ net worth where they can give a few percent of their net-worth to the U. as a tax write off and a social/PR bonus, or gritty/poor/on-brand minority students that make the U. brochures look “inclusive”. The middle (families who actually earn money through labor, even if it’s $1M/year, are simply not good candidates because they can do nothing for the U. except show up.

The easiest way to get into Ivy is to beg them and be grateful. Tell them your father died from torture by Putin, KimJon Un, Ayatollah or Maduro. America is salvation for you. They will let you enroll in whatever University you want

Hallelujah, a great day alive! :
This is spot on, and applies to many higher status non ivy schools as well. Many of these schools, accept people who went to prep schools, that only wealthy people could afford to send their children to. You don't randomly get the bulk of your student body coming from the top 1% of the wealth.

Only the rich and the poor get to go to top expensive colleges. We access community colleges, commute, or go to McGill in Canada. No student loans.

tc21120 :
students from the top 20% of household incomes make up 72% of the Princeton student body while students from the bottom 20% make up 2%. maybe they have a few charity cases they display on the brochures but it doesn't look like the middle class is rejected more than poor kids.

You Forgot to say….middle class HOMESCHOOL kids have no chance. If it was a flex why wouldn’t that ultra rich family homeschool why wouldn’t they pay for private 1:1 homeschool qualified instruction. Because they know it’s a joke and they want to make sure their kid gets into daddy’s business school. That’s why homeschool kids are not at ivy league schools they go to “religious private schools” or whatever for profit school so they can pay the ridiculous amount of tuition.

Its not obvious its counterintuitive[Snicker] Why colleges get so much federal funds when the most contributing group, the middle class, get a short stick. Time to stop taxes or paying fed funds to ungrateful colleges.
