The Destruction of Mankind is a famous ancient Egyptian myth preserved in the Book of the Heavenly Cow. It tells how the aging sun god Ra unleashed the fierce lioness goddess Sekhmet to punish rebellious humans, only to stop a total slaughter using a massive field of red-dyed beer. Ra grew old, and humans who once respected him began to mock him and plot rebellion against his rule. The Divine Eye: Hearing of the betrayal, Ra gathered the other gods and sent forth his Eye in the form of the goddess Hathor. The Rampage of Sekhmet: Hathor transformed into the bloodthirsty lioness Sekhmet, descending upon the desert to slaughter the rebellious mankind without mercy. Regret and Fear: Seeing the brutal carnage, Ra felt pity and decided the destruction had gone far enough, but Sekhmet's bloodlust could not be stopped by force. The Crimson Trick: Ra ordered swift priests to brew 7,000 jugs of barley beer mixed with red ochre from Elephantine to look like human blood. The Great Sleep: The fields were flooded with the red mixture. Sekhmet rejoiced at the sight, drank deeply, grew blissfully intoxicated, and fell fast asleep, sparing the remainder of humanity. Separation of Realms: Disillusioned with the world, Ra climbed onto the back of Nut (the sky cow) and ascended to the heavens, separating the divine realm from the mortal world. A Lesson in Balance: The story explained the presence of suffering and natural chaos in mortal life, while reinforcing the fragile balance of Maat (cosmic order). The Cult of Sekhmet was one of the most vital, fearful, and paradoxically protective religious movements in ancient Egypt. Known as

Known as "She Who Is Powerful", the lioness goddess embodied the devastating heat of the sun, plague, and war, yet she was also worshipped as the ultimate healer and patron of medicine. Because the ancient Egyptians believed that the force capable of inflicting a disease was also the only one capable of curing it, pacifying her wrath was a matter of national survival. The Memphis Triad: Her primary cult center was located in Memphis, the ancient capital. Here, she was integrated into a major family triad as the consort of the creator god Ptah and the mother of Nefertem, the lotus god of healing. The Temple of Mut at Karnak: During the New Kingdom, Pharaoh Amenhotep III commissioned hundreds of massive black granite statues of Sekhmet for the Temple of Mut in Thebes (modern-day Luxor). Archaeologists believe there were originally 730 statues—one for the morning and one for the evening of every day of the year—acting as a vast, stone litany to ward off her anger and prevent plagues. The daily routine of a priest of Sekhmet was entirely focused on pacification. If the goddess was kept happy, she transformed from a terrifying destroyer into a benevolent protector. The Feast of Drunkenness: To commemorate the Destruction of Mankind myth, her followers celebrated a massive annual festival of intoxication at the beginning of the year. Participants danced wildly, played loud music, and drank immense quantities of pomegranate-dyed beer and wine to ritually mimic the extreme drunkenness that saved humanity. Daily Liturgies: Priests chanted highly repetitive, hypnotic prayers twice a day to calm her fierce heart. Offerings of red linen, wine, bread, and fire were laid before her altars. The Slayers and Messengers: Her priests had to be precise; it was believed that any failure in ritual would unleash the "Messengers of Sekhmet"—invisible, demonic forces that traveled on the desert winds to spread pestilence and death. The First Physicians: The priests of Sekhmet were not just mystics; they were among the most advanced medical professionals and surgeons in the ancient world. They formed a specialized guild of doctors and magicians who utilized prayer alongside physical remedies, possessing an in-depth understanding of the human vascular system and the heart. #historyfact #pourtoiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii #sekhmet #eyeofhorus #eyeofrah
