But to cryogenic bulk haulers, this is the unmistakable sound of an ASME pressure relief valve saving the day.   This Airgas tanker is loaded with bulk liquid carbon dioxide (CO2), maintained at sub-zero temperatures under hundreds of pounds of pressure. On hot summer days or during extended city stops, radiant ambient heat causes the cryogenic liquid to boil off into gas, spiking head pressure inside the insulated vessel. When pressure hits the valve's threshold, it vents straight up into the atmosphere to equalize.
