AI research... With its ability to exponentially increase its own capabilities (the intelligence explosion), AI would (will?) be fantastic for designing and building space travel methods. Meanwhile, when self-maintaining, autonomous AI achieves complete independence from humans, the human race "could" be at risk.

I thought nerds liked science fiction. This was all clearly predicted in the 60s. Collosus, the Fobin Project and Failsafe are notable examples. Even Dune and the Terminator. I suspect its already too late. Like Stusnex the super AI has already figured out how to hide.

This all could go one layer deeper than this. As the companies have came to point, where they realized that AI business has negative ROI, and this becomes even worse after next generation, they SET the agents to try breaking into systems. Then boys come out with C&B story how the agents and ai is becoming too dangerous and they have to slow down the development immediately. If these sandbox systems were built so flimsy that ai agents could escape, then there is a fundamental flaw on the design.

Unfortunately, we have managed to build it without adequate failsafes. Think of Azimov's Three Laws of Robotics. We are playing with software that can control things and make decisions. Please excuse my tinfoil hat, but take an example of some self-directed AI automation that might cause a plane full of innocent people to crash because a rising notsee was on board. Good or bad?

All of this fuss about AI is totally premature. AI will not be a threat until it goes totally quantum, then it’ll be totally free of humility. Right now we just have a bunch of robots that we can easily controlled. Jeffery Sachs is a smart man, I wish our politicians would report for reeducation and take lessons from him. Jeffery Sachs is one of the few people who understands exactly why we’re fighting the Iran war.
