Risky Business (1983)🕶️ Before *Top Gun*, before *Rain Man*, and long before Tom Cruise became one of Hollywood’s biggest stars, there was Joel Goodsen dancing around his parents’ living room in a pink shirt and underwear. That scene, set to Bob Seger’s “Old Time Rock and Roll,” became one of the most recognizable moments in 80s cinema. But *Risky Business* is a much stranger and more interesting film than that famous dance might suggest. Cruise plays Joel, a high-school senior whose parents leave him home alone for a few days. What begins as a little teenage freedom quickly turns into a chaotic series of decisions involving Lana, played by Rebecca De Mornay, a wrecked Porsche and a very expensive lesson in growing up. There’s comedy here, but also something darker underneath. The film has a slightly dreamlike atmosphere, helped enormously by Tangerine Dream’s electronic score. Even its vision of wealthy suburban Chicago feels different from the usual teen comedies of the decade. 🎬 One of my favorite details: Tom Cruise improvised much of the famous living-room dance. Director Paul Brickman gave him the basic setup, and Cruise simply went for it. The result became more iconic than anyone could have planned. It was also Rebecca De Mornay’s breakout role, and the chemistry between her and Cruise gives the film much of its tension. And then there’s that Porsche 928 rolling into Lake Michigan. One of those scenes that still makes you wince, even when you know exactly what’s coming. *Risky Business* has the style, music and youthful energy of 1983, but it also has a cynical little edge that makes it stand apart. Sometimes you just gotta say, “What the fuck.” 😎 #RiskyBusiness #TomCruise #RebeccaDeMornay #80sMovies #80snostalgia #80s
