At the same time, the shelter’s new rescue process has created additional confusion, with email verbiage that rescues are struggling to understand. For dogs on these deadlines, that confusion can cost them their lives. When I met Baby Boy, I saw something very different from what his kennel behavior may suggest. He was attentive and immediately came up to the front of his kennel. He did NOT growl at me. He did NOT display aggressive behavior toward me. He gently took treats from my hand and was interested in interacting with me. The shelter has documented that Baby Boy is showing clear signs of fear based reactivity and avoidance in his kennel. He is overwhelmed by the noise, crowding, and stimulation of the shelter environment, and his stress is affecting his behavior. A shelter kennel is not the same thing as a home. The stress, confinement, noise, and constant stimulation can bring out behaviors in dogs that may not represent who they truly are. I can only speak to what I personally saw, and Baby Boy was attentive, gentle taking treats, and interested in me. Baby Boy is also slightly underweight and has been placed on twice daily feedings with weekly weight checks. If you are a rescue or foster who can help Baby Boy, please email the shelter immediately. If you cannot save him yourself, please share him so we can reach someone who can.
