the requirements for low body weight as a diagnostic criteria for eating disorders has always bothered me

The problem is that many will congratulate those in larger bodies displaying the same behaviors that would be worrisome in underweight individuals.

People treated my ED like it was an extra special diet for fat people who couldn’t lose weight “normally.” The behaviors were praised. My recovery is largely seen as a failure because I didn’t stay thin.

exactly, if someone is malnourished because of any other illness the doctors consider feeding tubes regardless of weight, but with EDs they don’t treat the malnourishment the same

oh yea, I was gaining weight while only taking in 1000 calories per day, and working out 2 hours per day 4 days a week. Now, I've lost weight, while eating more (eating 3 meals a day and a snack before bed) and working out less. I'm very confused lol

This finding is really concerning in the light of the introduction of GLP1s. So many people rapidly losing weight and we congratulate them for getting "healthier" but this suggests some people may be malnourished

The incidence of cardiovascular complications is roughly equivalent with both diagnoses!

absolutely! I don't have anorexia, but I'm currently having malabsorption issues and have vitamin deficiencies. I'm still overweight. I did lose 10lbs from it but still overweight.

The (not) funny part is they EXPECT you to have those behaviours if you're overweight

I’m tired of explaining this to medical professionals.

I remember going to a therapist after my doctor voiced concerned for my wonky blood work and vitals due to restrictive eating. I was told to come back when I’m underweight if I really have a problem and then congratulated on my progress 🫠

I was 80kg when I was diagnosed with atypical anorexia after losing 70kg thanks to cannabinoid hyperemesis. I was still overweight but my body was eating itself and all my organs were failing due to malnutrition. I spent so much time in hospital and people still don't believe it was that bad because I was still fat. 😭

As someone that experienced an ED that required multiple hospitalizations- the most critical (HR 28, 1.9 K+) I was a normal weight- I even put off going to the ER all day because “I looked fine” “not sick enough”. I even had a normal day- I went to work, but when I was driving home, I was getting tunnel vision. I was near dead, but a normal BMI.

also it pushes people to get worse, bc you won't get treatment or receive help until you are riskily underweight

My weight was “perfect” (as said by a medical professional), but I had a vitamin K deficiency that wasn’t diagnosed until 8 months into recovery.

the difference between anorexia and atypical anorexia being abt weight is still crazy to me, considering how competitive anorexia is. like giving someone an atypical anorexia diagnosis bcs theyre not low weight will likely only trigger and motivate them to eat even less

Exactly! Our bodies can't turn stored fat into fuel fast enough to keep your body running if it's the only food source. Plus nutrient deficiency doesn't give a crap what your BMI is. Just because you have more mass on your body, doesn't mean you can't suffer the mental and physical symptoms of eating disorders. I'm definitely more fluffy than I should be but I'm still anemic and suffering the effects of not eating enough for months. (severe grief/depression)

I'm so confused. This study sounds to me like water is wetm Do people and esp medical professionals assume that starving yourself is ok/healthy as long as you aren't underweight?

I think you went to tech, which is random but doesn’t matter. I’m 5 8 my freshman year I got up to 190 lbs and then I got down to 145 lbs in 3 months. I want to the health clinic because I hadn’t had a period in several months. At the time I went I was about 162. I had gained some weight back. The DR I REPEAT DR I saw said thank God you were on a diet. You need to lose some more weight you’re over weight. I had a SEVERE eating disorder at the time. I think about this all the times

I am unfortunately stuck in a house with my vehemently fatphobic cardiologist of a mother who forced me into taking a GLP-1 as a minor purely for aesthetic reasons despite knowing about my Atypical Anorexia Nervosa history! Needless to say, I will be looking for this study, thank you for informing me of it’s existence :) /gen

I will never forget in like 2016 I went to the hospital for sui attempt and then I asked for a therapy follow up, I met this "therapist" and told him my ED was one of my main concerns and id like inpatient or an IOP and he looked me dead in my face and asked me what my intake was I told him id fast upto a week at a time sometimes longer- he looked me dead in my face (someone who just attempted to take themselves off the earth) and said "we should work on *whatever dumb ass shit he said* because it doesnt look like youve not been eating." I got up crying said "bet" and almost died getting worse.
I wish I remembered his name because now id be calling every day reminding him he would have had my blood on his hands.

Yes! This is why I always say I can’t just “stop eating” to get thin. 1- I don’t want to get thin. Boring. And 2- it can be dangerous!!
