@denverskindoc: Want a wound to heal well AND leave the least noticeable scar possible? 🩹 Here's what I recommend as a dermatologist: 1️⃣ Skip the alcohol & hydrogen peroxide. They can damage healthy cells involved in wound healing and may actually delay the process. For most minor wounds, gently wash with mild soap and water instead. 2️⃣ You probably don't need Neosporin. Topical antibiotics can cause allergic contact dermatitis, especially with repeated use. Plain petrolatum (Vaseline/Aquaphor) keeps the wound moist and protected-which is exactly what we want for optimal healing. 3️⃣ Consider a hydrocolloid bandage. These help maintain a moist, protected environment and can stay in place for several days depending on the wound. Bonus: they also keep you from picking at it. 🙃 4️⃣ Once the skin has CLOSED, think silicone. Silicone scar gel or silicone sheets are among my go-to options for reducing the risk of a raised or thickened scar. Consistency matters-these are typically used daily for weeks to months, not just a few days. 5️⃣ Protect that scar from the sun. New scars are especially prone to developing persistent red or brown discoloration after UV exposure. Once the wound has healed enough for sunscreen, use broad-spectrum SPF 30-50+, and when possible keep the area covered. One of the biggest scar-care mistakes is waiting until you already have a noticeable scar to start thinking about it. Good scar prevention starts with good wound care from day one. ⚠️ These tips are for uncomplicated minor wounds. Deep/gaping wounds, bites, punctures, burns, wounds with uncontrolled bleeding, or signs of infection deserve medical evaluation. Save this for the next time you get a cut, scrape, or minor procedure! 🩹 📹 @Elif #WoundCare #ScarCare #ScarTreatment #Dermatologist #LearnOnTikTok

IMO, parents do that because their parents used similarly painful, stupid methods and now they carry the torch of "I suffered, why others shouldn't?"

As a nurse I have learned only to use water (in a medical setting we use NaCl) - if you use soap some of it can stay with the bacteria in the wound and heighten the risk of infection - it’s okay to do once but be thorough with the water after

Why oh why don’t ER docs know this. I had a three inch laceration on my cheek. I didn’t get stitches and was given zero wound care advice. I went to see my GP two weeks later and she told me about silicone sheets which took the red puffy look away thankfully.

Neosporin is an antibiotic, so it most certainly has been proven to prevent infection. Without it, if you do get nefarious bacteria in the wound and you don't put antibiotics on it, then the bacteria can multiply.
