After drilling at more than 12 locations, the team says it found no bedrock, challenging critics who have argued the 538-foot formation is simply a natural mass of rock. Instead, researchers uncovered deposits of rich black soil they now plan to test for elevated organic material that could be consistent with decayed wood.
