And it’s definitely not about doing marriage alone. It’s about knowing that married, remarried or single, your own money is your safety. Know what comes into your household. Know what goes out. Know what’s in your name. Know what you owe. Understand your pension and savings. Keep your skills current. And please, have money you can access yourself. I learned this after divorce, when I had three children and had to rebuild my financial life from the ground up. Today, I love being married. I love building a life with my husband. But I’ll never again confuse being looked after with being financially unaware. You can love your husband deeply and still know how to stand on your own two feet.
