Amir Mehdi — The Man Behind K2’s First Ascent On 31 July 1954, Lino Lacedelli and Achille Compagnoni became the first men to stand on the summit of K2. But behind that historic achievement was a Pakistani high-altitude porter whose sacrifice has too often remained in the shadows. His name was Amir Mehdi of Hassanabad, Hunza — the “Hunza Tiger.” A year earlier, in 1953, Mehdi had already played an important role on Nanga Parbat, helping Hermann Buhl during his historic first ascent and dangerous descent. (Wikipedia) Then came K2. On 30 July 1954, Mehdi and the young Italian climber Walter Bonatti carried heavy oxygen cylinders toward the summit team. They climbed to around 8,100 metres, far above the planned camp, but darkness came before they could reach the tent. With no tent and no sleeping bags, they were forced to spend the night exposed on a small ice ledge at an altitude where survival itself was uncertain. It was regarded as the highest open bivouac of its time. (Alpine Journal) The following day, Lacedelli and Compagnoni reached the summit using the oxygen that Mehdi and Bonatti had carried upward. Mehdi paid an enormous price. He was not equipped with the same high-altitude footwear as the Italian climbers. Severe frostbite destroyed his feet, and he ultimately lost all his toes. He spent months in hospital and never returned to serious mountaineering. (Wikipedia) The summit photographs carried two names into history. But K2’s first ascent was also built on the courage and sacrifice of men who carried the burden to the highest reaches of the mountain. Amir Mehdi may not have stood on K2’s summit in 1954, but he helped make that summit possible. His story deserves to be remembered. Amir Mehdi the forgotten hero of K2. 🏔️🇵🇰 #AmirMehdi #K2 #Chogori #K2History #b4adventure
