Under the dense dome where the white jasmine joins the rose, on the flowering bank, laughing at dawn, come, let us go down together. Two women walk down to a riverbank and take off their jewelry before stepping into the water — the opera's very first scene, before any conflict. They don't sing one after the other: they sing at the same time, at different pitches, start to finish. Lakmé is the daughter of a Brahmin priest; Mallika serves her. The two share the scene without ever taking turns — soprano and mezzo-soprano, voices written to move side by side from the first bar to the last. In this recording, Jaeeun Shin sings Lakmé, the soprano. Kara Morgan sings Mallika, the mezzo, conducted by Louis Lohraseb, with the Yale Opera and Philharmonia, at Woolsey Hall, on December 17, 2022. In spring 2026, Kara Morgan debuted as Zweite Dame in Die Zauberflöte at Opera Tampa and won the Luciano Pavarotti Foundation Opera Naples International Voice Competition. The voice that only accompanies here carries, on another stage, the name of Pavarotti.
