@data_in_motion: Chile ends on the highest crude divorce rate of the 24 countries tracked here: 3.63 per 1,000 people per year, 1.25 times Latvia. But the story of divorce across 62 years reveals a stunning shift in which countries struggle most with marriage breakdown. 🏆 FINAL RANKING 1. Chile — 3.63 2. Latvia — 2.90 3. Costa Rica — 2.80 4. Lithuania — 2.60 5. United States — 2.50 6. Sweden — 2.10 7. Denmark — 2.08 8. Finland — 2.00 9. Czech Republic — 1.90 10. Estonia — 1.90 11. Iceland — 1.90 12. Australia — 1.89 In 1960, Latvia dominated the leaderboard at 2.40 divorces per 1,000 residents. For nearly two decades, the Baltic nation held the unwanted crown, until the United States surged ahead in the mid-1980s. After trading the lead with Latvia and Estonia in the early 1990s, America held it for fifteen straight years, 1996 to 2010. Then came the plot twist: Chile, which only legalised divorce in 2004, took the lead in 2013, traded it with Denmark and Lithuania, and has held it since 2021. Key turning points: • 1960: Latvia leads with 2.40 • 1984: United States passes Latvia for the first time • 1996: America dominates, surpassing Estonia • 2014: Denmark briefly interrupts Chile's climb • 2022: Chile reaches 3.63, claiming the top spot Does your country appear in the top 12? And which surprise you most — that the leader changed so many times, or that a relatively small nation now tops the world?
