Preston Crown Court heard Smith systematically controlled the victim’s daily life, dictating when she was allowed to sleep, monitoring who she spoke to, and taking over her mobile telephone by forcing her to change the passcode before registering his own facial recognition onto the device. He actively tracked her movements, bombarded her with communications, and followed her to a party at a pub after being turned away from her home. Although door staff ejected him from the venue, Smith waited outside for her to leave. The court heard he repeatedly raped the woman, completely ignoring her pleas to stop. Smith admitted harassment upon his arrest but falsely claimed the sexual contact was consensual, forcing the victim through a trial where a jury found him guilty. On 25 September, the judge handed Smith a 22-year extended sentence comprising 18 years in prison and four years on extended licence, alongside lifelong notification requirements on the Sex Offenders Register.
