@draizident: This is what rabies can look like when it has reached the stage of clinical symptoms. Sadly, once rabies symptoms begin, the disease is essentially 100% fatal. At that point, there is very little that can be done to reverse the infection. This is why prevention is everything. Parents, please create an environment where your children feel safe enough to tell you when they have been bitten, scratched, or even had an animal’s saliva come into contact with broken skin or a wound. Do not assume that a small scratch or bite is harmless. And if your child is visiting someone who owns a dog or another potentially rabies-carrying animal, make sure the animal is properly vaccinated. If a child is bitten or exposed, immediately wash the wound thoroughly under running water and soap for at least 15 minutes, then go to a hospital as soon as possible for proper rabies post-exposure treatment. Depending on the type of exposure and vaccination history, this may include rabies vaccine, rabies immunoglobulin, or both. Do not wait for symptoms.
