@liz.cap: Your reminder that “just playing” is actually doing a LOT 👀 Funny enough, this little hack actually came from my sister, who is a lawyer, not a psychologist 😂 But she does have two kids who are the loves of my life, so moms stay winning. I studied play-based learning in early childhood education for my dissertation, and one of my biggest takeaways continues to be that learning does not always have to look academic. Sensory and open-ended play can support planning, problem-solving, flexible thinking, imagination, sustained attention, fine-motor skills, and sensory exploration. I love these little jars because there is no single “right” way to play. Kids get to build, create, change their minds, make up stories, and decide what happens next. For parents, they’re easy to bring to restaurants, appointments, travel, or waiting rooms. For teachers, they can be great for centers and choice time. And clinically, I love having something for kids to do with their hands because it can take some of the pressure off direct conversation. And shoutout to Melissa @Melsanchezz because we fully planned to make our own version of these in grad school 😂 Grad school had other plans for us. Play isn’t a break from learning.
