Supporters of former Romanian presidential candidate Călin Georgescu have continued demonstrating in Bucharest, gathering outside the Central Detention Center where he is being held. Around 1,000 people gathered Saturday night during the fifth consecutive evening of protests, chanting slogans including “Călin Georgescu is president” and calling for his release. Georgescu won the first round of Romania’s 2024 presidential election, but the Constitutional Court later annulled the election following allegations of electoral irregularities and Russian interference. Russia denied interfering, while Georgescu rejected the allegations. He was subsequently barred from participating in the 2025 rerun, which was eventually won by Nicușor Dan. Contrary to claims circulating online, Romanian authorities have publicly stated why Georgescu is currently detained. A Bucharest appeals court ordered him held for 30 days while prosecutors investigate allegations that he and associates defrauded a businessman of approximately €1.1 million through promises of securing a €15 million foreign credit line. Georgescu denies wrongdoing. He also faces separate legal proceedings connected to allegations of actions against Romania’s constitutional order and the promotion of fascist figures. His supporters reject the accusations and continue to portray Georgescu as the legitimate choice of Romanian voters, while his detention and the annulment of the 2024 election remain deeply divisive issues in the country. #Romania #CalinGeorgescu #Bucharest #RomaniaProtests #RomanianPolitics - @afrivision.media
