I've job hopped 2x in the last 4 years, and my income went from 140->250->400k. If you know your worth for your skills, don't settle and wait to move up

The problem is 1-2 years of unpaid or extremely low paid internships. You cannot survive in this economy on that salary just to get into a position where you’ve already paid thousands in tuition of a degree in

lol I job hop every 2 years and my last job hop was under 2 years for a $14k increase, less taxes and 1/3 of the work lolllll. Shitty managers don’t gaf they love exploiting people for the sake of their reputation giving .80cent raise in return

I’m currently making 50k a year fresh out of college, I’m planning to still apply to those 100k jobs but I’m going to keep this job and work my way around until I get the opportunity to go up

I’ve been in the working full time for about a year and a half, graduated college in 2025 and I went from 43k to 60k at 23. If you remain loyal to a company it will be slow

Your dad making 30k/yr starting out is crazy. Let’s low ball it saying your dad is 40, 20 years at 20 he was making 30k. 50k in today’s money. 50k as a 20 year old with no obligations is nuts. While yes 1-2 years isn’t a long time in hindsight, some people live in high living cost areas where suffering through a shit amount of pay for a long time causes them to have to leave their job in search for a higher paying one

I would say that if you can, you’d want a competitive salary starting out. If you stay with the company with lower salaries, you likely continue earning uncompetitive salary throughout all positions in the org. But sometimes, you need take a job and then move to another company after a year or so.

I agree, but I think you’re missing the actual issue. A lot of people coming out of college aren’t getting those 50 K starting job offers. They can’t find the first step and that’s the real problem.

Any job that has a good pay scale. Does take years because it’s slowly building every year. It’s also about seeing how company is structured. If there’s no vertical movement within the company leave

You’re right that you should take what you can than to wait. But also like you said “slowly” doesn’t apply to everyone. The average gen z expects $100k+ with average work ethic and skills.

i took a 45% pay cut in 2025 to get re-employed after a layoff and people were mortified that i would accept that salary instead of staying unemployed. less than 9 months later i landed another job at the same salary i was making when i was laid off. but i would not have landed that new job if i didn’t take the 45% pay cut because i would’ve been HOMELESS and also that 45% pay cut gave me MORE experience that broadened my skillset to be able to apply to a larger bucket of jobs that paid more

Great take, I think people should be less worried about making money fast and more concerned with choosing a field that has high earning potential down the line.

i think it’s stupid to reject job offers without leverage but i also think its stupid to stay stagnant somewhere and not try to gain leverage

In 2.5 years my friend is on her 3rd job in the company and now makes 40k more than i did. At some point i used to make more than her. I realized this year that companies will rather hire someone for a senior role than promote. I think it is company dependent i make more than the person who trained me on my team cause he was waiting for a promotion and my boss just declined. I think job hopping within the same company may be the way to go. I agree to some extent tho, always accept a job offer even if the pay is low but keep applying elsewhere
