@haroldwagnerthe2nd: Iran’s parliament speaker and chief negotiator, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, said Sunday that the Strait of Hormuz will remain closed until the United States meets seven conditions from the June Islamabad memorandum of understanding. Iran’s position is completely clear and firm, he said, and the period of drawn-out talks and one-sided demands is over, dpa and Reuters reported. He tied reopening to those seven conditions in the June memorandum. dpa, CNBC and The National did not publish a complete list of all seven. dpa said Tehran sent the demands to Washington through Qatar. Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has separately floated a seven-day roadmap that could restore passage only if the conditions are met. dpa said Washington would have to meet the preconditions first. Al Arabiya, citing Reuters, said normal passage could return within seven days if accepted. No agreement has been announced. The U.K. Maritime Trade Operations centre reported at least two weekend strikes, CNBC said. On Saturday a crude tanker was hit by an unknown projectile about four nautical miles east of Oman. On Sunday another tanker was struck in the Strait of Hormuz, damaging the engine room. The centre did not name who fired. Before the U.S.-Israel war with Iran began on Feb. 28, about a fifth of the world’s oil moved through the strait, and Brent settled Friday at $102.25 a barrel, CNBC reported. A prolonged closure would raise fuel costs, shipping insurance and inflation. Al Arabiya reported that Qatar is still shuttling messages between Washington and Tehran.
