I don't think it should be only a sit, I've seen thousands of owners thinking that giving a sit means the dog is calm. Then you say the release word and they still jump out of the house, I think it can be also having calm around you when you get the leash, get the harness or collar etc. And again I say this bc I see so many owners that ask their dog to sit, then they allowed an interaction let's say with a human and they're still are jumping and being overly excited. So I just think it depends also on the dog, bc some dogs could do well by just waiting for a calm behaviour in general (maybe also grabbing the shoes and waiting for them to calm down while you take all you need for the walk) and they would be frustrated by the sit. I'm not saying if they start to whine and bark ok let's go either way, so you're still not giving in the exciting behaviour but many owners don't even know that there's a difference between knowing how to sit and act calmly in a bar or a a restaurant (sorry for long rant lol)

I’m realizing now, English can be weird. What do you mean you start a walk by going in the house. And end with going out. That’s what I hear every time in and out is said for like we left and came back stuff. It just makes me chuckle now.

she has to sit while I open the door and again on the stoop while I close it or we go back in and start over.

I believe making them wait at corners too is also important. Because sure often times the neighborhood corners there isn’t traffic but that’s not always the case.
