Pada 12 Maret 1967, Soeharto secara resmi ditunjuk sebagai Pejabat Presiden Republik Indonesia oleh Majelis Permusyawaratan Rakyat Sementara (MPRS). Keputusan ini diambil melalui Sidang Istimewa MPRS yang berlangsung di tengah situasi politik Indonesia yang tidak stabil setelah peristiwa Gerakan 30 September 1965. Penunjukan ini didasarkan pada Ketetapan MPRS Nomor XXXIII/MPRS/1967, yang menyatakan bahwa Sukarno tidak lagi dapat menjalankan kewajiban sebagai presiden secara efektif. Dengan demikian, Soeharto diberi mandat untuk memimpin pemerintahan hingga dilaksanakannya pemilihan presiden secara resmi oleh MPRS. Peristiwa ini menjadi titik penting dalam sejarah politik Indonesia, karena menandai berakhirnya masa pemerintahan Sukarno dan menjadi awal munculnya era Orde Baru di bawah kepemimpinan Soeharto.
