@beck.lifts4: Doing cardio after lifting is completely fine for most people trying to stay lean and build muscle. The problem is HOW you do it. 1️⃣ LIFT FIRST IF MUSCLE IS THE PRIORITY Your best strength and muscle-building work should happen while you’re fresh. Doing hard cardio first can fatigue your legs and reduce the weight, reps, or quality you can produce during lifting. 2️⃣ CARDIO AFTER DOESN’T MAGICALLY BURN MORE BODY FAT Yes, your body may use different fuel sources during different parts of the workout. But long-term fat loss still comes down mainly to your overall calorie deficit. Don’t confuse “burning more fat during cardio” with automatically losing more body fat. 3️⃣ THE TYPE OF CARDIO MATTERS 20 minutes of incline walking is VERY different from finishing leg day with brutal sprints. Hard, high-volume cardio creates more fatigue and can interfere with recovery if you overdo it. 4️⃣ KEEP MOST POST-LIFT CARDIO EASY TO MODERATE If your goal is muscle + staying lean, think: Incline walking StairMaster at a manageable pace Cycling Easy steady-state cardio You should finish feeling like you did cardio—not like you need two days to recover from it. 5️⃣ BE SMART AFTER LEG DAY Your legs are already fatigued. If cardio starts hurting your squat, RDL, leg press, or recovery, lower the intensity, shorten the session, or separate cardio from lifting. 6️⃣ MORE CARDIO ISN’T ALWAYS MORE FAT LOSS If you add tons of cardio but become exhausted, move less during the rest of the day, or get way hungrier, the benefit can shrink fast. Cardio should HELP your deficit, not make your entire routine harder to maintain. 7️⃣ IF ENDURANCE IS YOUR MAIN GOAL, THE ORDER CAN FLIP Training for a race or trying to maximize cardio performance? Then cardio may deserve priority while you’re fresh. Your workout order should match your main goal. Simple setup for muscle + fat loss: Lift hard first → 10–30 min cardio after → keep intensity recoverable → eat enough protein → keep calories aligned with your goal Cardio doesn’t kill gains. Poor recovery, excessive volume, and letting cardio ruin your lifting can. Save this before your next workout.
