🌊😳 PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND… DID YOU KNOW AN ENTIRE SALTWATER COVE DISAPPEARED FROM DOWNTOWN?! Not a pond. Not a little stream. AN ENTIRE COVE. And if you’ve walked through Waterplace Park, you’ve walked through a place with a history stretching back thousands of years. Here’s the story most Rhode Islanders have never seen. 👇 🌿 1500 — BEFORE PROVIDENCE The Great Salt Cove reached into what is now downtown. Forests surrounded tidal marshes and riverbanks. Indigenous communities had already lived in this region for thousands of years. 🛶 1600 — THE INDIGENOUS WATERFRONT Narragansett and other Indigenous peoples fished, gathered shellfish, traveled by canoe, and maintained connections across this landscape. This was never empty land waiting to be discovered. It was home. ⛵ 1636 — ROGER WILLIAMS ARRIVES Providence began as a small English settlement on an already inhabited Indigenous homeland. The cove was enormous compared with the new town. 🏘️ 1700 — A TOWN TAKES SHAPE Wooden wharves, trading vessels, houses, and workshops appeared along the waterfront. The town was growing around the water. 🚢 1800 — THE CITY CLOSES IN Providence was becoming a busy American port. Warehouses and merchant ships lined its waterways. But the cove’s biggest changes were still ahead… 🚨 1846 — THE PLAN TO RESHAPE THE COVE Providence approved filling part of the Great Salt Cove to make way for development and railroads. Imagine deciding that a piece of the waterfront needed to become solid ground. 😮 1850s — THE COVE BASIN The remaining waters were shaped into an almost circular basin, with a promenade where people could stroll and gather. For a while, it was a beautiful public space. 💀 LATE 1800s — THE PROBLEM GROWS Pollution, sewage, competing development plans, and railroad expansion threatened the basin. Then came the transformation nobody could reverse. 🚂 1891–1892 — THE FINAL FILLING The remaining Cove Basin was filled. Land that had been water became part of a new railroad district. 🚉 1898 — THE RAILROAD EMPIRE A grand new Union Station opened. Tracks, platforms, rail yards, and bridges reshaped downtown. An elevated railroad barrier, nicknamed the “Chinese Wall,” separated parts of the city for generations. 🚗 1970s–1980s — WHERE DID THE WATER GO? Parking lots. Pavement. Cars. Railroad infrastructure. Parts of Providence’s rivers were hidden beneath roadways and decking. The original cove was gone. But the story had ONE LAST TWIST… 🏗️ 1980s–1990s — THE COMEBACK Providence relocated tracks, removed barriers, uncovered waterways, and created new river channels, bridges, and walkways. 🔥 1994 — WATERPLACE PARK Waterplace Park was dedicated. The first WaterFire installation also took place in 1994. The old natural cove wasn’t restored exactly as it was. But the city finally turned toward its rivers again. 🌆 2026 — LOOK AT IT NOW From Indigenous homeland to colonial port… From railroad empire to parking lots… From concrete to Waterplace Park. SAME PLACE. CENTURIES OF CHANGE. Next time you walk through Waterplace Park, remember: you’re looking at a waterfront Providence almost forgot. 📸 These 17 images are artistic historical reconstructions, not photographs of the past. 👇 RHODE ISLAND, I HAVE A QUESTION: Do YOU remember downtown Providence before Waterplace Park? What did it look like? Share your memories, tag a lifelong Rhode Islander, and pass this story on.
