Hypothermia- people do odd things including throwing their gear around and removing clothing even when they are freezing.

extreme disorientation on hikes is not as uncommon as people want to believe and it will make someone do things that a rational mind simply cannot rationalize. coupled with hypothermia, someone act truly out of their mind. I think it's probably less scary to think a supernatural force got him than to reckon with the fact that our brains can and will betray us when we need them the most
