It then hangs above an area where other insects often pass. When it detects prey below, it slowly lowers its body while keeping the web open. As soon as the insect comes within reach, the spider lunges quickly and stretches the web even wider. The silk falls directly over the prey and sticks to its body and legs. The insect tries to escape, but every movement makes it more trapped. The spider pulls the web in with its legs and quickly brings the prey closer to its body. It then immobilizes it with more silk and begins feeding.
