Here's what's going on. In August, the landlord gave Pineapple Hill and the other small businesses in the plaza a 60-day notice to vacate so the property can be redeveloped. Angela says she was originally told she'd get a lease back once construction wrapped, but nothing was ever put in writing, for her or anyone else in the center. "I was verbally told that they would be giving us a lease back after the remodel, but now it's crickets," she told KTLA. "Nothing's in writing. Nothing's in writing for anybody." The only tenant confirmed to stay is the In-N-Out. "For whatever reason, they were able to work things out," she said. "We were not given that opportunity." Pineapple Hill earned Legacy Business status from the Mayor's office after nearly 50 years as a Sherman Oaks gathering spot, and Angela says the hardest part is what happens to her staff, some of whom have been part of the place for decades. "It's been my customers, my employees, my kitchen staff who have been here since 1978, my bar staff," she said. "I have to fight [for the business]. That's why I'm doing this." She's also worried about the cost of fighting it. "I don't have a ton of money and I'm afraid to spend what little money is left on an attorney and then lose." Angela is asking locals to sign a petition to save Pineapple Hill, and there's a GoFundMe set up to help with legal fees or a possible relocation. She's also calling on city and county officials to create protections for long-running small businesses like hers. "Our history is really embedded in our pubs and restaurants and that's where you find most of the stories and the history of Los Angeles," she said.
