The Mexican Lancers were elite cavalry troops of the Mexican Army during the 19th century, celebrated for their exceptional horsemanship, high mobility, and formidable shock tactics on the battlefield. Armed with nine- to ten-foot ash-wood lances tipped with steel blades and swallow-tailed pennants—alongside curved sabers and carbines or horse pistols—these troopers were drawn from seasoned frontier presidial garrisons and regular cavalry regiments such as the Dolores, Tampico, Vera Cruz, and San Luis regiments. During the Texas Revolution (1835–1836), lancers under commanders like General José de Urrea played a pivotal role by screening army movements, surrounding James Fannin's Texan forces at the Battle of Coleto Creek, and serving as scouting and flank columns at San Antonio and San Jacinto. Moving into the Mexican-American War (1846–1848), lancers remained the most effective and feared branch of Mexico's armed forces; General Anastasio Torrejón's lancers launched a major flank attack against American forces at the Battle of Palo Alto, General Andrés Pico's lancers inflicted heavy casualties on U.S. dragoons using rapid lance charges at the Battle of San Pasqual in California, and massive lancer formations executed sweeping attacks across the rugged battlefield of Buena Vista (La Angostura), while also seeing combat at Resaca de la Palma, Cerro Gordo, and Molino del Rey. #fyp #texasrevolution #cavalry #mexico #History - @jzhlucio
