@paigewash: In a perfect world (hopefully one day) all nonspeaking children will get AAC devices as young as possible but unfortunately I know from experience that is just not what always happens (yet). #aac #aacawareness #nonspeaking #autism
This was my experience too. No SLP recommended AAC. It was another parent who introduced me to AAC.

We dealt with the same! Multiple SLPs were pretty against introducing an AAC. Wild!

I have a 16 year and 4 year old on the spectrum. It was such a loooong process to get my older son an aac and be able to use it at home. Finally during covid he was allowed to keep it home. He speech boomed after that.

I’m so sorry this was your experience! Like you said there are no prerequisites. So glad he has access, I hope you were able to find an SLP that can support him and his device.

us to. until we met a wonderful slp through the University of Utah
she watched my child completely control an ipad by herself and was like yep lets get an aac
all the other slps were like "shes not accurately using her pointer finger" "shes not choosing between two items" blah blah blah

I love seeing kids take off with their AAC. Even just visual sheets, once they know they are there they want to tell us what they want.

SLP here! Best AAC practice is the assume competence (provide access, allow exploration, model model model, respond to all attempts and activations of icons as if they are intentional, etc.) AND there are no prerequisites to AAC. So sorry your SLPs did not do this for you, keep advocating mama 😢💕

I teach 7th and 8th grade life skills. I can’t tell you how many of my non speaking students come to me NEVER ONCE being considered as an AAC candidate.

Unfortunately, Same 😭. Thankfully I reported to my PCP, changed clinics and I got one for free through my insurance and all they needed was the application name we went with touch chat. I ended up homeschooling and still do because my ABA refused until our AAC Specialist and school Psychologist at the school demanded in his IEP that AAC is mandated in ALL settings to his ABA this month 🥹💙✨️

Similar story, slp said he wasn’t ready (his point wasn’t that good at that point so I backed down) once his pointing got better I was on her about it. Finally got her to write the report (needed for our insurance) and then dropped her for someone else in the practice bc she wasn’t comfortable using it!
