Malaysian-born scientist Dr Swee Lay Thein of the US National Institutes of Health (NIH) has won the 2026 Breakthrough Prize in Life Sciences for research that helped pave the way for gene-editing therapies for sickle cell disease and beta-thalassaemia. Born in Kuala Lumpur as the seventh of nine children, Thein initially planned to study biochemistry before pursuing medicine. She graduated from the University of Malaya and trained as a haematologist in London before spending years researching blood disorders at the University of Oxford. In 2000, she became Professor of Molecular Haematology at King’s College London, where she also led the Red Cell Centre at King’s College Hospital, caring for adults with sickle cell disease. She moved to the US in 2015 to lead the Sickle Cell Branch at the NIH’s National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute. In her acceptance speech, Thein reflected on more than 20 years of challenges and highlighted the need to make these treatments accessible to millions of people who still lack access to care. The award adds to her list of accolades, having shared the 2024 Shaw Prize in Life Science and Medicine with Dr Stuart Orkin and been elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 2025.
